Days ago, the Titan submarine went missing in some of the deepest waters of the Atlantic.
The submarine is owned by OceanGate, and the CEO of the company was onboard. Unfortunately, all five passengers onboard were presumed dead, and it is widely believed that the submarine imploded.
The Passengers
All passengers were identified as British businessman Hamish Harding; British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son Suleman; former French Navy diver Paul-Henry Nargeolet; and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush. Channel 5 in the U.K. will air a brief documentary on the tragedy today. The Titan rapidly ran out of oxygen, was controlled by a video game controller, and only had one window.
Risky Technology
Following the confirmation of the five deaths, stories surrounding the company continue to resurface. The risky technology was utilized by several of the biggest names in entertainment and finance. “The Simpsons” writer once took a tour on the Titan submarine and claimed that the waiver warned of possible death three times.
The Cost of Search and Rescue
According to experts, the cost of the unprecedented search for the missing Titan submersible will easily stretch into the millions of dollars. The look range crossed thousands of miles and included the US Coast Watch, the Canadian Coast Protect, US Naval force and other organizations, and private substances. Maritime researchers called an implosion the worst possible outcome during the search, and under intense pressure at extreme depths, the Titan’s hull imploded.
Waivers and Legal Implications
The four passengers who died this week when the Titan imploded were most likely asked to sign liability waivers. Passengers also waive the right to take action for “personal injury, property damage, or any other loss” that they experience on the trip, the document states. Legal experts said that what the investigation into the disaster uncovers will determine much about the case, including what caused the vessel to implode. As families of those who died consider their legal options, the signed waivers could play an outsized role in the legal proceedings.
Transportation Safety Board of Canada Investigation
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said Friday it’s launching an investigation involving the loss of the Titan that will focus on the cargo vessel Polar Prince. Polar Prince is a Canadian-flagged ship that served as mothership to the Titan submersible. The Transportation Safety Board will investigate the Polar Prince in its role as a support vessel and will conduct a safety investigation into the circumstances of the operation, the agency said.
